Overall show dates and times are...SYRACUSE (Central NewYork Boat Show): February 9th - February 13th
Wednedsay 2/9, Thursday 2/10, & Friday 2/11: 1pm to 9pmSaturday 2/12: 10am to 9pm
Sunday 2/13: 10am to 5pm
Simply tell the attendant at the front door of the CARGIL BUILDING that you are working in the booth for Sodus Bay Yacht Club. If you have your membership card with you, you can also show them that. We are sharing our booth with the Great Sodus Bay Association, it will be across from the Krenzer Marine display. In case of emergency (e.g. if you get in a jam and some eager beaver won't let you in) call Michael Shults at (585) 230-5759, or the show manager, Dennis Honeywell at 800-211-3620 and POLITELY explain the situation to him.
Once you get to the booth, ask the person working before you to show you around, and/or look for a large white binder labeled "INFORMATION FOR BOAT SHOWS BOOTH STAFF" for detailed instructions on operating the booth.
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR "WORKING THE BOOTH"
The reason for being at the show is to create recognition and get new members if we can.Talk to attendees, ask them what benefits they would expect or desire from a yacht club, and then respond with appropriate information about SBYC, Sodus Point and and SBJSA.
HANDOUTS: There are a number of (paper) handouts on the table - familiarize yourself with them when you get to the booth. There are SBYC Burgee COASTERS and "BUSINESS CARDS" that can be handed out. We have plenty, but the idea is to hand them to people who stop and chat and not just dole them out to every passer by.
MEMBERSHIP: There are membership packets with applications in the plastic tub under the table. There are also sheets that explain the current Membership Incentive Program. The membership material should not be left out on the table but rather handed to people who express an interest. If someone expresses an interest in learning more about membership GET THEM TO FILL OUT THE INFORMATION SHEET. Make sure their contact information is readable and complete (full first name, address with zip, telephone number) and put your name on the entry too. Give them a couple SBYC coasters, give them one of our SBYC “business cards”, and thank them for expressing interest and leaving their address. Where appropriate, you may also want to point out the directions on the back of the SBYC business cards, and invite them to call Michael Shults to arrange to come out for a visit and a special guided tour of the club.
Similarly, you can invite people to come to the Antique Boat Show, stressing that it's open to the public and an excellent opportunity to visit the club early in the season. There are handouts giving more information on it. You can again point out the directions on the back of the SBYC business cards, and tell them that if they call Michael Shults to let him know they're coming, he'll arrange for them to get a special guided tour of the club.
Don't forget to “sell” prospective members on the appeal of the IDEAL 18 / Small Boat Program. There are handouts giving more detailed information on it. FYI - Some details of the program include:
- Members will be "certified" to use the boats by one of several Certification/Training Officers. Basically, we will go through a check list to make sure potential skippers know the rules of the program, boat/sail control lines, rules around how they should find the boats and how they should leave them when done sailing, etc.
- The existing program features 4 boats available for member use at NO CHARGE for new members (a subscription fee of $100 per year has been instituted for regular members). Members "reserve" the boats ahead of planned use so that we can make sure the proper number of boats are in the water and ready to sail.
- Racing programs include Fleet Racing, Match Racing, Women's Fleet Series and "special events" such as the 100 Years Regatta. We've had weekly Friday night racing which has been very well attended, and may add further races in the future.
- The boats will be available for member use, we're calling it "Open Sailing", weekdays (from say 9:00AM), weeknights (until say 8:00 or 9:00PM) We believe the only time boats will not be available for "Open Sailing" is when the boats are reserved for one of the racing programs.
Have a great show!
